Why it’s banned
Power level (no published rationale). Community: Draftsim also calls it arguably a format-identity ban (Legacy staple).
Official reason
No official reason published.
Community & historical context (not an official statement)
Analytical/community: one-mana instant that puts any card in the graveyard, the fastest reanimator setup (Dark Ritual/Entomb/Animate Dead starts) (Draftsim; Chronicles). Wizards restricted it in Vintage and banned it in Type 1.5 in March 2003, banned it in Extended Sept 2003, freed it in 2009 and banned it again in Legacy in November 2025.[1, 2, 3, 4]
The story
Entomb (Odyssey, 2001) is reanimator's best enabler. Wizards banned or restricted it in Type 1.5, Vintage and Extended in 2003, unbanned it in 2009, and re-banned it in Legacy in November 2025. Premodern has banned it on every archived list since 2018; no official reason, though community writers note reanimation is otherwise very strong in the pool.
